29 March 2001 - 29 March 2001

Both the next European Framework programme and the proposed European research area (ERA) will be discussed at a forum on 'the future perspectives of European research' in Vienna on 29 March.

Organised by the Bureau for international research and technology cooperation (BIT) in Vienna, the event will address key issues which have been raised in documents relating to both the ERA and the next Framework programme, namely how to create the ERA, defining what research policy needs to focus on and establishing a partnership between the European institutions and the Member States.

European Commissioner for research, Philippe Busquin will be attending, as will other key members of the European Commission along with their counterparts from the Austrian government and research and academic institutions.

The agenda includes sessions dedicated to developing the European research area, with an analysis of the political challenge it presents and also to the next Framework programme, with debate concerning the coordination required and the opportunities it affords SMEs.
