Senior representatives of South Africa's 15 technology universities, the 'Technikons' are travelling to Brussels to participate in the Technikon Expo and conference on 3 April 2001.

'By visiting the Expo, potential European partners interested in collaboration with Technikons, in areas such as research cooperation or academic, student and staff exchange, will be able to gather first-hand information and form partnerships,' says a spokesperson for the event.

The full-day conference programme running parallel to the Expo, will present the Technikons to the European audience, focusing on the their crucial contribution to meeting South Africa's education and technology development challenges. The potential for cooperation between Technikons and their European partners, and facilitating instruments such as South African participation in the European Union's Framework programmes, will also be important themes.

Speakers at the conference will include senior representatives of the European Commission's Research Directorate-General as well as South African officials. Success stories of existing collaborative partnerships between Technikons and European partners will also be highlighted.
