The University of Osnabrück, Germany will host a conference on the role of emissions trading in environmental protection on 26 and 27 April.

Speakers at the conference include Dr Enno Harders from the European Commission, Franzjosef Schafhausen from the German Federal Environment Ministry and Dr Joachim Hein from the Federation for German Industry. Attendees will also include representatives from science, business and politics. Around 150 participants are expected.

On account of the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, the European Union demanded that its Member states reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by eight per cent from the 1990 level. Trade in emissions was to be a fundamental part of the Community's strategy and was to be introduced in 2005 at EU level, and worldwide from 2008.

'The Kyoto Protocol fixed emissions trading as a central instrument in climate protection. However, details as to how such a trading system can be realised are still unclear,' said Professor Rengeling from the University of Osnabrück.For further information, please consult the following web address:
