European scientists, policymakers, business representatives and journalists will join European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin and current chair of the Research Council Thomas Östros at the University of Umeå in Sweden on 11 and 12 June, to discuss the ethical dilemmas facing scientists working in biomedicine.

'Ethics and biomedical research - the process of balancing benefits and risks', organised by the EC and the Swedish Presidency, will review the ethical debate by concentration on three current examples of controversial biomedical research: xenotransplantations, human biobanks and the use of stem cells.

Sessions will also cover broader issues relating to European research policy and biomedicine.
