Desertification in the Mediterranean drylands
The workshop, addressed to scientists and public operators involved in monitoring and facing desertification processes in the Mediterranean area, is funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework programme's INCO Accompanying Measures.
The specific objectives of the workshop are:
- to present and compare scientific experiences on desertification issues in the Mediterranean - from EU or other international projects - introducing and promoting new forms of collaboration and scientific measures;
- to disseminate the main findings of the EU-funded DEMOS project;
- to promote a permanent scientific forum on the problems and perspectives of monitoring and fighting desertification in the Mediterranean, involving the participation of the decision makers, public and private, and stimulating the development of structural plans of restoration at regional level.
The key topics of the workshop will be:
- ecophysiological analysis in monitoring land degradation;
- remote sensing and global information system (GIS) techniques for landscape monitoring;
- ecological modelling and integrated techniques for monitoring desertification;
- state of the art and perspectives of monitoring desertification in the Mediterranean.
