Experts in environmental metrology will meet with government and industrial representatives in Paris on 14 and 15 June to discuss the role of measurements in protecting the environment.

Attendees include Jack Metthey, Acting Director of the Research DG, Gérard Schwartzenberg, France's Minister for Research and MEP Yves Piétrasanta.

The conference will focus on issues such as the potential uses of measurements and their present limits. Delegates will also tackle questions regarding our reaction when results show a low risk level, but concern large geographical areas or large populations, how to interpret these results, when to use the precautionary principle and how to inform the general public.

The event is being organised by the French Institute national de l'environnement industriel et des risques (INERIS) in partnership with the European Commission's Research DG and BNM/LNE (Bureau National de Métrologie/Laboratoire National d'Essais) with the support of the European Network of Environment Research Organisations (ENERO) and the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).

The conference is aimed at scientists involved in research programmes or operational monitoring networks in relation to the quantification of environmental risks and the assessment of their various consequences, as well as risk managers, responsible for drawing up European or national regulations and taking decisions on the protection of the environment and populations, on a national and local authority level and in companies.

The programme includes sessions addressing the implications, progress and problem areas specific to air, water and soil pollutions. The event will also provide the opportunity for a review of research and further development requirements of Europe's scientific networks, competitiveness and policies in the field of environmental safety. For further information, please consult the following web address:
