The Joint Research Centre of the European Communities is organizing the first seminar on the status of EARSEC (European Airborne Remote Sensing Capabilities), to be held on 13-14 September 1993 at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Italy). EARSEC is intended as a long term programme which will constantly adapt to new technology in sensors and platforms. There are several trends which point towards a rapid growth in airborne remote sensing research and environmental monitoring. In comparison with satellite data collection, airborne sensors can be used selectively in a flexible way to acquire high spectral and spatial resolution data over smaller areas.

This seminar is intended to offer a unique opportunity for participants to become acquainted with the latest developments in EARSEC and will provide potential users and customers of the EARSEC programme with an up-to-date overview of the developments and achievements of the programme. In addition, the seminar organizers would like to invite national programmes to provide information on their work in order to develop a synergy on airborne remote sensing in Europe.

The seminar will be conducted by a discussion on the needs of airborne remote sensing by members of the Commission of the European Communities, Members of the European Parliament, representatives of European aerospace organizations and other national governmental institutions. The seminar will be chaired by Dr. J.P. Contzen Director-General of the Joint Research Centre and Dr. R. Kleisy Director of the Institute for Remote Sensing Applications.
