High level representatives from leading European research organisations will meet with Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin in Brussels this week at the EIROFORUM conference.

EIRO, the European intergovernmental research organisation, has been developed and deployed in Europe since the early 1950s to link powerful research infrastructures and laboratories that are used by an extensive network of scientists. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), these organisations 'represent European spearheads in some of the most crucial basic and applied research fields.'

Seven of these organisations have set up a coordination and collaboration group, dubbed 'EIROFORUM'. The members include: the European particle physics laboratory (CERN), the European molecular biology laboratory (EMBL), ESA, the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the European synchrotron radiation facility (ESRF), the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and the European fusion development agreement (EFDA).

This week's meeting will provide an opportunity for he EIROFORUM members to discuss recent developments in the European Research Area with Mr Busquin.
