EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection David Byrne will attend the Swedish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries conference on ethics and animal welfare, to be held on 29 and 30 May in Stockholm.

Around 350 delegates from EU Member States will attend the conference, which will focus on animal welfare and why it is important to treat animals in an ethically acceptable manner.

'We need animals - for food, clothes or as pets for example, but animals also have needs of their own. We must understand and show consideration for this. We must also create the right conditions so that animals can behave naturally,' said Sweden's Agriculture Minister, Margareta Winberg.Members of the press wishing to participate should contact:
