Busquin to attend sustainable chemical production conference
Presentations on three EU-funded projects will precede a visit to the Solvay research centre at the end of the day. The presentations all demonstrate the drive towards sustainability within the chemical industry:
The project SUPERPOL (polymerisation and polymer modification in supercritical fluids - a novel way for cleaner manufacturing of plastics), financed under the Brite Euram 3 of the Fourth Framework programme has succeeded in demonstrating that the use of compressed carbon dioxide as an alternative to organic solvents in a variety of organic syntheses points the way to a reduction in toxic emissions and improved product purity.
Also on display will be the CHEM (advanced decision support system for chemical/petrochemical manufacturing processes) project, financed under the Fifth Framework programmes' Growth programme. This project has shown that process optimisation through an advanced decision support system reduces raw material usage. Similarly, another Growth project, INTINT (intelligent column internals for reactive separations), has shown that improvements in distillation catalysts does the same by reducing the production of unwanted secondary products.
