The Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden is organising a European conference on 'women in the life sciences, tools for successful research careers', to be co-financed by the European Commission and to take place on 3 to 4 December.

Swedish Research Minister, Thomas Östros will be joined by representatives from the European Commission, including Rainer Gerold, director or the ERA: science and society directorate and Nicole Dewandre, acting head of unit for women and science as well as numerous representatives from academia.

Participants will be given a background description of the situation of woman scientists in the EU and an introduction regarding the current state of the art in Europe. The ETAN report on the underrepresentation of women in the higher positions in the life sciences will be presented, as well as the work of the Helsinki group. High level researchers from four European universities will also speak of personal career development experiences.
