As part of the EU research project 'Harmonising the knowledge about biomedical side effects of doping', an international symposium on the subject will be held at the Institute of Morphology and Tumour Research at the Deutsche Sporthochschule in Cologne on 23 July.

Scientists, politicians, athletes, trainers, teachers and doctors will attend the conference, which will cover issues such as the doping definition list, side effects, anabolic steroids, nutritional supplements and doping in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).

On 11 July, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, Viviane Reding, announced that legal and political conditions rule out any EU contribution to the operational budget of the World anti doping agency (WADA) as the Nice Council envisaged in December 2000. The Commission has however listed doping in sport as one of its priorities for action, and is prepared to support WADA projects which fall within the Community's sphere of competence.For further information about he symposium, please consult the following web address:
