The role of the European Research Area in the enlargement process of the European Union is to be examined in a conference in Prague on September 20 2001.

The conference, which will include Czech government officials and academics as well as JRC and Commission representatives, is being organised by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Technology centre of the academy of sciences in the Czech Republic.

The event aims to pave the way for enhanced collaboration by promoting dialogue with research organisations in the Czech Republic and identifying potentially interested partners.

The JRC, the research organisation of the European Commission, plays a key role in supporting the enlargement process. Through eight specialised institutes in five different countries, the JRC supports the efforts of applicant countries to acquire the scientific and technological know-how needed to implement and develop EU law. The European Research Area initiative proposed by Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will enable the JRC to consolidate this role through improved networking with research organisations across the enlarged Union. For further information please contact:
