The Belgian Presidency will be highlighting the importance of ensuring that SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) have a secure line of financing at a conference on 24 and 25 October in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

The event has been organised by Serge Kubla, who currently chairs the European Industry council. European Research Commissioner, Philippe Busquin is also expected to attend. As well as keynote speeches, there will also be an exhibition with over 100 stands at the concurrent 'European risk capital exhibition'. This is aimed at investors, spin off companies and risk capital companies, and will also provide networking opportunities.

At the conference, there will be three workshops designed to analyse three areas which are key to SMEs and their financing: how to boost innovation; micro-loans; and the relationship between companies and bankers. On the second day of the event, the relationship between public and private, between small and larger companies and between European models and those of other parts of the world will be analysed. In the case of the public sector, discussions will take place on what role it can play in helping to 'make up for the deficiencies of the market' identified in specific sectors. For further information, please contact:
