The European Commission's Joint Research Centre is to hold an information day on 'Science and technology in support of policies: towards new partnerships between the Joint Research Centre and Belgian research organisations in the framework of the European research area initiative' in Brussels on 6 December 2001.

The event, which is being organised in collaboration with the Federal Office for scientific, technical and cultural affairs, aims to respond to the specific interests of the Belgian scientific community and promote future cooperation. The event will be opened by Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin, JRC Director General Barry McSweeney, President of the Research Council and Minister President of the Brussels-Capital region François-Xavier de Donnea and Yvan Ylieff, government commissioner assigned to the Minister for scientific research.

Case studies of scientific support for policy making will be discussed at the event on the following topics:

- safety and quality of the food chain
- genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
- reference materials and methods in the context of the ERA
- technology foresight: key examples
- cybersecurity
- global change
- JRC and enlargement
- nuclear waste management
- nuclear safety
