A Belgian presidency conference on 'Public awareness of science and technology in Europe and its regions; building bridges with society: benchmarking, best practices and regional diversity' will be held in Brussels from 17 to 18 December.

The conference aims to boost debate on the relationship between science, society and the citizen. It is hoped that discussions at the event will produce recommendations on issues such as the need for a general public which is well-informed in matters of science and technology, a skilled work force and cultural and democratic aspects of the gap between science, technology and society. EU Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will give the opening address at the conference, which will also feature talks from Commission, government and academic representatives.

The event is being co-organised by the European Commission, the Belgian federal office for scientific, technical and cultural affairs, the French Community and the Walloon Region. It is being co-ordinated by the Flemish Community.For further information, please consult the following web address:
