11 November 2002 - 11 November 2002

From 11 to 13 November 2002 the European Commission will hold a major conference in Brussels to mark the launch of the EU's Sixth Framework programme (FP6) for research, which will run from 2002 to 2006.

The event aims to create a forum for the presentation of the objectives and priorities of the next Framework programme and to explain the rules for participation. It will also create opportunities for scientific debate and exchange of best practice beyond areas addressed in the Framework programme.

There will also be plenary sessions addressing all the main thematic priorities of the Framework programme and the cross-cutting issues of the European research area, such as human resources, mobility, patenting and intellectual property. Sessions will also be held to provide guidance on participation in FP6, along with symposia, workshops and poster sessions from science, industry and other interested parties on topical subjects which may extend beyond the remit of FP6. A call for proposals for the topical sessions will be published early next year.

In addition, the conference will feature project presentations for the media and a general audience presenting the aims and results of research projects carried out under past EU research programmes or projects involving international cooperation. In parallel to the conference, there will be a major exhibition of EU-sponsored research projects. Two press briefings will be held each day of the event. For further information, please contact:
