A conference to examine the achievements of the first year of the European Commission's Go Digital initiative will take place in Brussels on 16 May 2002.

The 'eEurope: SMEs - Go Digital' event, organised by DG Enterprise and DG Information Society, will reflect on the results and experiences of the first year of the initiative and raise awareness of how European SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) can use information technology to boost their competitiveness.

It will bring together representatives of the Commission, 'Euro Info' centres, chambers of commerce, e-business support networks and other stakeholders to assess initial results and prepare future initiatives.

To date, the main achievements of the project include:

- the launch of a benchmarking initiative to assess public sector policies in support of e-business for SMEs;
- the establishment of an e-business 'market watch' to regularly publish quantitative indicators on the take-up of e-business by SMEs;
- the launch of a legal information portal for e-business, providing an overview of relevant e-commerce legislation and self-regulation initiatives;
- the Go Digital awareness campaign with more than 70 events throughout Europe;
- over 60 take-up projects under the IST (information society technologies) programme;
- the establishment of an ICT (information and communication technologies) skills monitoring group with representatives from each Member State, to track demand for ICT and e-business skills.For further information, please consult the following web address:
