An EU-funded project which examines the use of technology to help commuters share cars and reduce congestion and pollution will go on show at the European Conference on Mobility Management (ECOMM) 2002 in Brussels on 16 May.

The TECAPSY (Trans-European carpooling and parking systems project) is funded under the EU's TEN-Telecom programme to boost deployment of trans-European e-services. It aims to assess the market potential of carpooling in different European commuter environments and of software such as driver-passenger matching through call centres and direct web-based matching. It also aims to develop a digital mobility system providing traffic information over the Internet and prepare an information parking, or 'i-parking,' solution to work with the carpooling system by, for example, providing privileged parking for carpoolers.

At present, 80 per cent of European road transport is through private means such as individual cars. It is estimated that an increase in carpooling of just 20 per cent could reduce the number of drivers in Europe by 1 million.

A field trial of TECAPSY products and services began at the University of Alicante in Spain, where the majority of students and staff travel to the campus by car, in January 2002.

The TECAPSY launch event will also provide an opportunity to discuss the achievements and difficulties of partners involved in the projects. For further information on the project, please contact:
