The consortium of a project funded under the Fifth Framework programme's (FP5) Information society technologies (IST) programme will present the results of their project to launch a 'best practice and transferability handbook' for the mobility service centres in the EU in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on 6 June.

Some 10 partners from the UK, France and Germany were involved in the MobiService centres project, which investigated the multi-modal systems and services provided by the leading MobiCentres in Europe with the aim of identifying best practice. MobiCentre is the generic term for either a mobility service centre or a mobility management centre, both of which provide traffic and travel information services and advice for individual travellers and/or management facilities for transport operators. The project has investigated urban traffic control systems, bus priority services, public transport route planning for travellers, ticket information and purchase and information on parking availability and delays and congestion on the roads.

'The MobiService centres project has provided us with an excellent opportunity to analyse and discuss the wide variety of dissemination methods that are available for the public such as visitor centres, telephone enquiry hotlines, as well as broadcast information that can go to television, radio, teletext or the Internet,' said project manager Peter Leach.

The results show which facilities, systems, services, technologies, applications and methods are common practice and which should be adopted to provide better services. The results provide a snapshot of what could be considered as best practice.

The study also analysed a range of end-user needs as identified in a previous EU funded project, and has developed a best practice manual, a dynamic, interactive, web-based resource to be owned and updated by a newly formed network of MobiCentres.

The conference in Frankfurt will discuss the future of intelligent transport systems and the importance of mobility services as well as presenting the project results. For further information, please consult the following web address:
