The current state of research and technology in information and communication technologies in public administration in the candidate countries will be reviewed at the 'Cities on Internet' conference in Zakopane, Poland on 12 to 14 June.

The conference, which is organised by Poland's National contact point for the Fifth Framework programme (FP5), the State committee for scientific research, the Federation of municipalities and districts of the Republic of Poland under the patronage of the European Commission and the President of the Republic of Poland, will promote the idea of eDemocracy and eGovernment.

The conference will also address issues raised in debates at the ministerial conference on eGovernment in Brussels and the 'eGovernment at local and regional level' conference in Antwerp, both held in November 2001.

The main objectives for the conference are:
- discussion of the influence of IST (information society technologies) on democracy development in pre-accession states and the use of IST to intensify public participation in democratic procedures;
- evaluation of the present state of ICT (information and communication technologies) as used by local administrations in Poland;
