An international conference on meeting the challenges for the development of research, technology and innovation policies for biotechnology will take place in Tartu, Estonia on 12 September 2002.

'Foresight on biotechnology in small candidate countries' is targeted at policymakers responsible for public policy planning and implementation in science, technology and innovation, with particular emphasis on biotechnology.

The conference aims to introduce foresight methodologies as tools for policy planning and to discuss issues and challenges related to the development of biotechnology, particularly in small candidate countries. Issues ranging from social justice to changing economic paradigms will be addressed. The event will also focus on how establishment of the European research area will help candidate countries to formulate and coordinate their policies for biotechnology.

The conference is being organised in conjunction with the biggest biotechnology conference in the Baltic States - 'Gene technology forum 2002 - personalised medicine: myth or reality?' - which will be held on 13 and 14 September in Tartu.For further information on 'Foresight on biotechnology in small candidate countries,' please contact:
