9 October 2002 - 9 October 2002

The European Commission will support an international conference on information society technologies (IST) for broadband Europe taking place in Bucharest, Romania on 9 to 11 October.

The conference is being held shortly after the official launch of the eEurope 2005 action plan, and during the transition period from the Fifth to the Sixth Framework programme for research, technological development and demonstration (RTD).

The event will address the following issues:

- RTD challenges for the technologies essential to the deployment of broadband infrastructure, applications and services in Europe;
- Role of the candidate countries in this RTD agenda and their participation in IST in FP6;
- Impact of broadband Europe on the economy and society.

The technical focus of the conference will be on information and communication technologies developed within the Fifth Framework programme's IST programme, which are essential for the development and implementation of broadband in Europe.

In addition to plenary sessions, the event will include parallel technical sessions in three topic areas: technologies for broadband access networks, digital interactive generic applications and services and enabling component technologies.

The conference is being organised by the Romanian Ministry of communications and information technologies with the support of the Ministry of education and research, the Romanian Academy, the research institutes INSCC and ICI and the Commission's Information Society DG.For further information, please consult the following web address:
