The Greek Presidency is to begin its EU Presidency with a conference, organised in partnership with the European Commission, on 'Benchmarking national RTD policies', which will take place in Athens, on 17 and 18 January 2003.

In September 2000 the Commission and the Member States undertook the first ever exercise of benchmarking national research policies, as an essential component of the European Research Area project. The conference will announce the results from the first phase of benchmarking, the conclusions of which will be discussed with a view to setting up a framework for the next phase.

The first phase examined five themes: human resources in research and technological development (RTD), public and private investment in RTD, the impact of RTD on competitiveness and employment, science and technology productivity, promotion of RTD culture and public understanding of science.

Speakers will include representatives from the Greek Presidency, European Commission, European Parliament and Secretariat of Scientific Policy of Spain.For further information about EU benchmarking, please visit:
