The Institute of Oceanology in Varna, Bulgaria, is organising a conference on scientific policy challenges towards effective management of the marine environment, to take place from 13 to 18 October.

The event has been initiated by the EU supported CESUM-BS project. Funded under the Fifth Framework Programme's international cooperation programme, the project aims to provide a 'tool box' of measures for sustainable development and management of the Black Sea region, while harmonising regional regulations with those of the EU.

The conference will provide a forum for the exchange and dissemination of environmental and socio-economic knowledge, experiences and achievements. It is also hoped that the conference will help to define a strategy in support of sustainable development and environmental management of the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions. The conference will be followed by a forum on the 'global monitoring for environment and security' (GMES) initiative.

Topics for discussion include:
- the development and application of ecosystem health indicators;
- biological diversity and coastal habitat protection;
- modelling, global climate change and ecosystem application;
- data and information management;
- new technologies for coastal zone management;
- sustainable management of living and non-living resources.For further information, please visit:
