An International Symposium "Geothermics '94 in Europe" will take place in Orleans, France, on 8-9 February 1994.

Organized with the collaboration of the EU's specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energy (JOULE II, 1990-1994), the objective of the event is to assess state-of-the-art geothermics in Europe and to promote exchanges of both information and experience.

The two days of the Symposium cover interdependent themes. An appraisal of the results and progress in research of the JOULE programme topics will be made (day 1). These will be compared with experience and achievements gained in over 20 countries (day 2). More than 30 oral presentations and seventy papers will illustrate work in the areas of corrosion and scaling, reinjection of brine, field evaluation in deep hot rocks, and the exploration, evaluation and development of medium-to long-term geothermal resources in Europe.

The Symposium aims to provide a global vision of the technical and scientific problems which must be overcome in this field, as well as an understanding of the economic and administrative constraints relative to individual countries. It will provide an opportunity to assess, in the light of current technology, the means of developing geothermal resources for energy, the environment and the economy in the European states.
