The European Institute of Bioethics (IEB) is organising three public conferences in Brussels, each covering an area of biotechnology that has raised important ethical questions.

On 24 September, Professor Axel Kahn, director of research at INSERM in Paris, will address the issue: 'therapeutic cloning: the big illusion', and outline the potential benefits and consequences that the technology could have on society and the economy.

Dr Delassus, director of maternity care at Charcot Hospital, Yvelines, will address the question: 'clone or baby? the identity of the embryo' on 21 October. Dr Delassus will attempt to redefine the mother-baby relationship and outline the fundamental principles of human maternity.

On 7 November, Dr Bayle from Chartres Hospital will analyse the psychological development of human beings before birth, and examine ethical issues related to assisted reproductive techniques.

The conferences are open to all, and will be held in French.For further information, please contact:
