A Colloquium on "Intercultural Exchanges in Europe and Modern Technological Support" will take place in Mons, Belgium, on 17-18 February 1994.

The event aims to identify current problems between European peoples of different cultures, examine existing solutions and establish new possibilities, at a time when international contacts are intensifying. The meetings will also study the support provided by modern technologies in this field. Presentations will include:

- The European Union and the new information technologies;
- Regional policies on research into the language industry;
- Aspects of intercultural communication: translation of philosophical texts;
- European history on videodisk;
- A new method of teaching languages;
- The technologies supporting the UNESCO linguistic programme: the intercultural perspective;
- The importance, prerequisites and limits of intercultural exchange;
- From written text to screen;
- Furthering multilingual written communication: the role and the tools of the translator;
- The mobility and diversity of the European school population: the challenges for education.

The Colloquium is organized by the University of Mons-Hainaut and ATIM (L'Association des Traducteurs et Interpretes Diplomes de l'UMH), with the patronage of Commission Vice-President Professor Antonio Ruberti, who will open the meeting. Contributions will also be made by senior representatives of the Office for Official Publications, the Joint Research Centre, and the Commission's Translation Service.
