Conference on Clean Coal Technology, Lisbon
Combining biomass and municipal, agricultural and industrial waste with coal for the new generation of "clean" coal power plants may provide an innovative means of tackling Europe's greenhouse gas emission problems. In addition, development of this cheap, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels presents advantages which include the recycling of biomass as a useful and CO2-free fuel. These processes offer a potential solution to the European Union's accumulating waste disposal problems.
Implemented as an APAS (Action de Promotion, d'Accompagnement et de Suivi) within the context of the Commission's non-nuclear energy programme (JOULE 2 1990-1994) the Clean Coal Technology Programme is the world's largest RTD effort in this area, with a total of 31 participating research institutions, including 16 major industrial companies. The extent of industrial involvement in both financing and research is a clear indication of confidence in the technology's success.
