The first ever European semantic web symposium (ESWS 2004) will be held in Heraklion in Crete, Greece, from 10 to 12 May. The semantic web is described by the World Wide Web Consortium as: 'an extension of the current web in which information is given well defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.'

With a number of Sixth Framework Programme projects underway in this field of technology, the EU has demonstrated its commitment to the semantic web. ESWS 2004 will bring participants up to speed with developments in these and other leading projects.

Specific topics for discussion will include:
- languages, tools and methodologies for semantic annotation of web data;
- semantic web services;
- semantic web based knowledge management;
