The specific programme of RTD in measurements and testing (BCR), 1990-1994, intends to hold a workshop on "Improvement of Trace Element Determinations in Plant Matrices" in Brussels on 28-31 May 1994.

The determination of trace elements in plant matrices is now required in the frame of a number of EC Directives on the monitoring of environment and food quality. The need for good quality control of plant analysis has led the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) to organize a series of interlaboratory projects over the last ten years, including the preparation of certified reference materials, for the improvement and quality assurance of trace element determinations. However, the quality control of critical analytical steps, eg sampling and pre-treatment, has not been considered in classical interlaboratory exercises.

It is now timely to bring together invited experts in order to establish the state of the art of plant analysis, including sampling and sample treatment procedures, to investigate where limitations exist and discuss the work necessary to overcome these, to detect where techniques have sufficiently been developed to produce viable and reliable results and to discuss the trends expected in the field of trace element determinations in plant matrices.

The workshop discussions will be organized in round-tables dealing with different topics on trends in:

- Sampling;
- Sample preparation;
- Sample pre-treatment;
- Final determination.

An additional round table will discuss the needs of standardized methods in plant monitoring.

Participants will be invited to make an active contribution to the round-table discussions, which will be chaired by a selected person. The minutes off the discussions will form the basis of a paper summarizing the participant's views on the different topics.

Participants are requested to prepare a short paper (10-15 pages) for the workshop, giving their critical views on the topics to be discussed, the procedures used in their own laboratories and the precautions taken to achieve good quality control of analysis. The proceedings of the workshop will be published as a special issue of an international scientific journal.
