Kiev workshop on pipeline integrity
The Commission's THERMIE programme plays a vital role in encouraging the development of innovative energy technologies. This is particularly relevant for the hydrocarbon sectors of the energy industry. The EU realizes the importance of existing technology for the developing energy sector in the countries of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe. Through its OPET network and EU energy Centres, the EU promotes the transfer of energy technologies to these countries.
Pipeline integrity is a vital issue for the gas industry. There is currently up to 30% being lost from Central and Eastern European pipelines. This represents a large waste of energy as well being a hazard to human health and the environment. Although losses from oil pipelines are less, the damage caused to the environment is considerable.
The workshop is intended for engineers and energy managers running oil and gas pipelines in the former Soviet Union and Eastern European States as well as local and government authorities
