15 April 1994 - 15 April 1994
Belgium
The TELECITIES network is a EUROCITIES initiative for cities wishing to work together to develop the potenial of telematics in the urban environment. The main objective of the project is to promote appropriate telematics applications to support the regeneration of urban areas by developing more effective economic strategies, tackling unemployment, combating social exclusion and improving the standard of living in urban areas. This objective is addressed in the Commission's White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment.

The three main priorities of TELECITIES are to:
- Support the development of telematics projects and strategies on a cohesive trans-European basis
- Identify projects of common interest where European financial support would give a clear added value element to telematics applications;
- Develop an effective dialogue with relevant European institutions working in the area of information and communications technologies.

The TELECITIES network is open to all cities - not just those which are members of EUROCITIES - and to regional public institutions which share its aims and objectives.

A general meeting on 15 April 1994 in Brussels will discuss a number of issues including the Commission's Telemtics programme and TURA (Telematics in Urban and Rural Areas), which is the working title of the planned support for urban areas.
TELECITIES has already established three key working groups on teleworking, public teleservices and elderly and disabled people.
