Symposium on the functioning of the western Mediterranean Sea: EROS 2000, Mallorca
The understanding of the biogeochemical cycles and their alteration by human intervention in the coastal zone are becoming crucial in the preservation of an ecosystem of critical value for the sustainability of the global biosphere. Knowledge of the functioning of the coastal environment and its interaction with the ocean will lead to the evaluation and prediction of its reaction to global and local environmental and climatic changes.
The rationale of EROS 2000 is to address these problems by carrying out interdisciplinary investigations in esturine/coastal sea systems, representing contrasting environmental characteristics of European coastal waters. The Rhone river delta, the Gulf of Lyons and, later, the Western Mediterranean Sea were the geographical targets of the project.
The symposium will present these research results to the interested regional, national and international scientific communities, policy makers and environmental managers. The event will also provide an opportunity to bring the EROS project results into the perspective of complementary efforts undertaken by other multinational, national or regional programmes.
The symposium is co-organized by the European Community's RTD programmes of research and technological development in the field of the environment and in marine science and technology (MAST), both of which supported the EROS 2000 project.
