European Research Conferences are co-sponsored by the European Science Foundation and the Euroconferences activity of the European Union. Each of the conference consists of a series of meetings, held typically every other year. As a rule, there are neither written contributions nor proceedings. Unconventional ideas and new approaches, not yet fully explored, are encouraged.

The conferences cover all research fields, from natural and technical sciences to social sciences and humanities. The programme for 1994 includes:

- Bioseparation (fundamentals and engineering aspects of protein purification), Dourdan, France, 28 May - 2 June 1994;

- Fundamental aspects of surface science (surface and thin film magnetism), Biarritz, France, 10-15 June 1994;

- Inorganic chemistry (surface organometallic chemistry, molecular materials and catalysts), Davos, Switzerland, 11-16 June 1994;

- Reactivity in organized microstructures (new materials), Strasbourg, France, 6-11 July 1994;

- Supramolecular chemistry (molecular recognition from biology to materials), Mainz, Germany, 11-16 August 1994;

- Biophysics of photosynthesis (primary processes in photosynthesis), York, UK, 27 August - 1 September 1994;

- Electronic structure of solids (dynamics and excitations), Gausdal, Norway, 27 August - 1 September 1994;

- Theoretical models of chemical reactivity (modelling photochemical reactivity), San Feliu de Guixols, Spain, 8-13 September 1994;

- Neural mechanisms of learning and memory (localization and formation of memory trace), Pisa, Italy, 9-14 September 1994;

- Electronic and atomic collisions (processes at low and ultralow energies), Giens, France, 10-15 September 1994;

- Cardiac electrophysiology (from the ionic channel to arrhythmia mechanisms, the role of potassium channels), Aghia Pelaghia, Crete, Greece, 21-25 September 1994;

- Dynamical properties of solids (phonon in solids and at surfaces), Lucca, Italy, 17-21 September 1994;

- The molecular epidemiology of cancer, Crete, Greece, 17-22 September 1994;

- Quantum optics, Davos, Switzerland, 24-29 September 1994;

- Particle-solid interactions (electronic excitations in bulk and surfaces), San Sebastian, Spain, 1-6 October 1994;

- Molecular and cellular mechanisms of cartilage and bone remodelling, Giens, France, 1-6 October 1994;

- The development of sensory, cognitive and motor capabilities in early infancy (from sensation to cognition), Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, 8-13 October 1994;

- Self-nonself discrimination (unresponsiveness versus memory), Il Ciocco, Pisa, Italy, 15-19 October 1994;

The European Research Conference programme is run by the European Research Foundation in association with the European Mathematical Society, the European Physical Society, the Federation of European Chemical Societies, the European Union of Societies in Experimental Biology and the European Union of Geosciences.

Most of the Conferences in the present series have received funding from the EC programme "Human Capital and Mobility".
