An information day organized by the IMPACT (Information Market Policy Actions) programme of the European Commission will take place in the afternoon of 30 May 1994. It will immediately precede the "IDT '94" conference and exhibition in Paris from 31 May to 2 June 1994. The purpose of this information day is to present an overview of developments taking place at European Union level in relation to the information market.

The Commission's White Paper on "Growth, Competitiveness and Employment" addresses topics of direct relevance to the information market and the information industry in the chapters dealing with Trans-European Networks, the Information Society and the Audio-visual Sector.

The programme for the day will include presentations relating to the development of the information society in Europe. Speakers will address current trends and issues relating to the global information market, the strategic orientation for the information market in Europe, and "information engineering", a new initiative within the Fourth Framework Programme of research and technological development.

A panel of industry contractors who are involved in shared-cost projects in the area of interactive multimedia (IMM) and geographical information systems (GIS) will discuss their experience of working with other European partners and with the Commission within the framework of the IMPACT programme.

The following projects will be demonstrated during the information day:
- "Flanders: Genesis of European Art and the Flemish contribution" is a multimedia database on Flemish art and its influence on XIVth - XVIIth century Europe bringing together works of Art from the main European museums;
- MMAD is a multimedia dictionary of modern and contemporary art on CD-ROM with more than 2500 entries;
- ENVIDUCATION is a multimedia geographical information system for the education market;
- MAGIS is a map supported area information service based on GIS providing visual information.

These projects will also be demonstrated at the exhibition throughout the IDT event.
