A conference entitled "Safety, hygiene, control and quality of agri-food products in Europe" will be held in Brussels on 19-20 May 1994. The conference is being organized with the support of DG VI (Agriculture) of the European Commission.

Mrs Christiane Scrivener, European Commissioner responsible for consumer policy, will address the opening session of the conference which will examine all aspects of the agri-food industry in Europe.

On the subject of agri-food research and technological development in Europe, there will be presentations on the following:
- The European Union's (EU) research and development programme and support measures in the food sector;
- The importance of technological developments, especially biotechnology, in promoting food quality, hygiene and safety.

The conference will also discuss the role of innovation and technology and how far the EU initiatives in these areas contribute to the promotion of innovative development in the agri-food sector.
