The sixth European Union contest for young scientists will take place in Luxembourg on 26-28 September 1994.

The contest was set up to promote the ideals of cooperation and interchange between young scientists and to provide a stimulus for the development of promising young scientific talent.

By organizing the contest, the EU hopes to strengthen the efforts made in each Member State to attract young people to a career in science, technology, research and development.

The contest is part of the EU's Human Capital and Mobility programme (1992-1994). A new training and mobility programme is expected to begin at the end of 1994 and will cover the period of the Fourth Framework programme for research and technological development and demonstration, 1994-1998.

The contest is intended to encourage the career development of the most promising young scientists in Europe by having them meet other young people with similar interests and by giving them the opportunity to meet some of the most prominent scientists in Europe. It is open to the National Contests for Young Scientists in each of the Member States of the European Union and Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Entries are considered from candidates who at the time of participation in their National Contests were aged 15 or over. Proposals from students in higher education will be accepted if at the time of their participation in their National Contest their were in their first year of university studies. In all case the upper age limit will be taken as being under 21 years old on the date when the candidates entered the National Competition.

The Contest accepts project entries from all fields of scientific endeavour. The Contest Secretariat can only accept applications that have been nominated by the office of the National Organizers in the participation countries. Completed project applications should be received by the European Commission in Brussels by Friday 17 June 1994.
