With the support of the Euroconference activity under the Human Capital and Mobility programme, a research conference on "Sea and ice climate interactions: The deep-sea floor as a changing environment" was organized by the European Science Foundation and held in Barcelona on 8-13 February 1994.

The conference attracted some 60 scientists from 15 countries. Besides the training aspect, the conference aimed at discussing major issues in deep-sea research for the coming decades. The overall objective of the conference was to promote European scientific programmes in deep-sea research and to identify common European efforts in deep-sea instrumentation and developments in a multidisciplinary approach.

The conference focused on the following subjects:

- General interest in the deep sea as a changing environment and its importance;
- The deep-sea benthic boundary layer;
- The deep-sea floor as an active interface;
- The sub-sea floor as a paleo-record and an active source and sink for materials.

The conference also served as a preparatory meeting for a further conference in Bremen in September 1994 where scientists and policy makers from all over Europe will interact on the formulation of a long-term strategy for ocean and polar research.
