The European Commission has organized, as a follow-up to its BAP, BIOTECH and BRIDGE programmes of biotechnology, a workshop on "Protein engineering" to take place in Beijing on 22-27 August 1994.

The workshop is part of a series that bring together Chinese and European scientists to exchange information, define common areas of interest and to explore the potential for future collaborations. Collaborative links in biotechnology between the European Union and China have already been set up through the establishment of the China-EU Biotechnology Centre in Beijing.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

- Protein crystallography and NMR spectroscopy;
- Electron crystallography and image reconstruction;
- Receptor-based drug design;
- Development of industrially useful improved enzymes;
- Protein structure modelling, design and prediction;
- Protein engineering using selection methods;
- Bioinformatics support for protein engineering.

The workshop aims to determine areas of potential collaboration, both in academic research and in industrial development. Some of the activities may receive support under the Fourth Framework Programme.
