Nanotech projects on display at ESOF
Eight projects will be on display, each of them funded under one of three thematic priorities from the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) - 'new and emerging science and technologies', 'science and society' and 'nanotechnologies, materials and production technologies'.
- Cornea Engineering: aims at reconstructing a human cornea in vitro, for use both in corneal grafting and as an alternative to animal models for cosmeto-pharmacotoxicity testing.
- Antistorm 'Anthropogentic Aerosols Triggering and Invigorating Severe Storms': combining satellite and ground observations of storm-cloud structure and aerosol pollutants to determine the effects of pollution on storm dynamics in Europe. The models developed by the consortium should help to improve forecasting and even suggest strategies for mitigating storms before disaster strikes.
- Safer 'Microsystems and nanotechnology for prenatal diagnosis': aims to develop a set of combinable microsystem modules for purifying and analysing foetal cells from maternal blood.
- Decide 'Deliberative Citizens' Debates in European Science Centres and Museums': involving the public in political decision making in nanotechnology with the help of the PlayDecide nanotechnology kit. Alongside nanotechnology, other controversial life science issues discussed are: HIV/AIDS, neuroscience, pre-implementation genetic diagnosis, stem cells and xeno-transplantation.
- Dotik ('Dotik' = 'Contact' in Slovene): developing a new training scheme for science animators, that enables them to be better actors in the science and society dialogue.
- Nanologue 'Europe-wide dialogue on benefits, risks and social, ethical and legal implications of nanotechnologies': aims at facilitating a dialogue between researchers, business and civil society about the benefits and potential impacts of nanoscience and nanotechnology applications.
- NanoDialogue 'Enhancing dialogue on nanosciences and nanotechnologies in society at the European level': provoking and facilitating social dialogue on nanotechnology between the research community, citizens and other stakeholder organisations.
A presentation by CORDIS on how to benefit from EU research funding will also take place in the EU exhibition area. For further information, please visit:
