A kick off event on creating more sustainable and safe laboratories in Europe will take place in Leuven, Belgium, on 23 April 2007.

The event will aim to raise awareness of the environmental impact and energy performance of laboratories within the Higher Education sector and disseminate knowledge on how to initiate a European network of sustainable laboratories.

The day will feature:
- presentations on experience of sustainable laboratories (including topics such as designing for flexibility so that maximum use can be made of existing facilities) by leading European experts;
- an overview of the US Labs21 initiative, and practical lessons from it on design and operation;
- an update on the new European standard for fume cupboards;
- opportunities to network with peers from a range of European countries.

The event will target energy and environmental managers, architects and others designing new or refurbished laboratories and facilities, and other staff who manage them.For more information, please visit:
