On 28-29 November 1994, the European Commission, DG XII, will present the final results of its APAS "Clean Coal Technology programme" in Lisbon. The APAS ("Activite de preparation, d'accompagnement et de suivi") Clean Coal Technology Conference will examine the programme and the combined use of biomass or other wastes with coal to produce environmentally friendly energy.

The conference will address the following:

- Examination of the use of combined biomass and wastes with coal in the context of energy security;
- Presentation of an alternative approach to upgrading biomass and wastes as an energy resource;
- Critical comparative analysis of the energy option for biomass and wastes with other methods of upgrading;
- Detailed techno-economic assessment of combined use of biomass and wastes with coal in two different thermal conversion systems;
- Environmental benefits through the optimization of the emissions of pollutants and CO2 from energy systems using coal;
- Determination of technical, political and socio-economic barriers that impede the use of co-combustion or co-gasification systems;
- Define areas and opportunities for future collaboration.
