To mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) Ispra site in Italy will host a special symposium and its biggest ever Open Doors Day on 11 and 12 May.

The anniversary of JRC's birth certificate - the Euratom Treaty - will be celebrated with a special symposium attended by the Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potocnik, the Italian Minister for Research and University, Fabio Mussi, the Secretary General of the European Research Council (ERC), Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker, and other high level representatives from research and industry.

Visitors to the Open Day will find out about many of the JRC's activities, including work on biometric passports, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), future energy resources, and alternatives to animal testing.

Younger visitors will be able to don a white lab coat and study cell cultures under the microscope, discover how animals and plants can be used to verify the health of lakes and rivers, build structures of different materials and test their earthquake resistance on a small shaking table. For further information, please visit:
