An international conference on biofuels, hosted by External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will take place in Brussels on 5 and 6 July 2007.

The aim of the conference is to launch a discussion on developing an international approach to biofuels that would reap the benefits, while ensuring sustainable development and avoiding the creation of new risks.

The conference will be addressing four key issues:
- development of international trade in biofuels;
- environment and biofuels;
- biofuels and developing countries;
- current and future research prospects.

The conference will include keynote statements by Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Brazil's President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates.

Commissioners Andris Piebalgs, Peter Mandelson and Stavros Dimas, as well as ministers from countries of the EU, Africa and Asia will participate. Business representatives and academics, representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other lobby groups will also be present.For more information, please visit:
