A technology transfer day on software usability is being organized by the British Computer Society and will take place in London on 6 September 1994.

The event will introduce a new methodology which can assess the user-friendliness of software and systems using a variety of tools, in response to the EU Directive on the usability of display screens.

The focus of the day will be metrics for usability standards in computing (MUSiC). Usability is becoming increasingly important to the computing industry following the publication of the EU Directive 90/270 (Minimum health and safety requirements for work and display screen equipment).

MUSiC, which is an ESPRIT II project involving partners from the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands, will be introduced at the meeting. The project's methodology is able to quantify usability and its goals are both to introduce a Europe-wide standard of usability and a method of assessing the equipment's compliance with the Directive.

The tecnology transfer day is intended for the benefit of software developers, software houses, large-scale users of software and hardware manufacturers.
