The First World Congress on Applications of Transport Telematics and Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems will take place from 30 November to 3 December 1994 in Paris. The event is being co-sponsored by ERTICO (Europe), IVHS America (North America) and VERTAS (Pacific Rim).

The Advanced Transport Telematics programme (DRIVE) of the European Commission is sponsoring a major part of the technical sessions, where the results of its 65 projects will be presented.

The theme of the Congress is "Towards an intelligent highway transport system". It will comprise the presentation and discussion of advanced concepts and development activities. The Congress will also host a major international exhibition of new equipment and systems. The executive session will include the following:

- The need to improve transport systems;
- Application of transport telematics: a response to mobility needs;
- Industry's and operator's policy priorities;
- Financing of advanced transport telematics (ATT) and intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS) development;
- The legal and social implications of transport telematics;
- New partnerships, and institutional and organizational issues;
- Towards ATT market development;

The technical sessions will focus on applications and technology developments, test and evaluation results, as well as institutional, legal, safety and market issues. The titles of the technical sessions are:

- System architecture;
- System safety and safety-critical systems;
- Information management;
- Automatic debiting services;
- Freight and fleet operations;
- Emergency management and systems;
- Public transport;
- Urban traffic management;
- Inter-urban and rural traffic management;
- Traveller information services;
- Human factors;
- Driver support systems;
- Communications systems and services;
- Energy and environmental implications;
- Elderly and disabled road users;
- Standards;
- Evaluation methods;
- Interface between transport modes.
