A workshop on science, participation and politics will take place in London, UK, on 20 November.

Recent policies on genetically modified (GM) crops, hybrid embryos and nanotechnologies have all involved or sought to involve public dialogue to some extent. However, the event's organisers - Demos and Greenpeace - believe that a credibility gap is emerging, with participation being used to close down debate as well as open it.

The event will address questions such as: Where does this leave science democracy and civil society? Does public participation undermine non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and scientists? Does it empower them?

The event is supported by the Science, Technology and Civil Society project, funded under the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).For further information, please
