The Global Carbon Project and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are organising a workshop on the 'Vulnerability and opportunity of methane Hydrates, to take place on 13 and 14 March 2008, in Laxenburg, Austria.

Methane hydrates are an energy source of potentially staggering magnitude compared with other known hydrocarbon deposits. It is found in deposits in Polar Regions and in costal shelves around the world. Both global warming and the decision to extract them could open a large new source of carbon to the atmosphere over the next century with its associated impacts to climate change.

The workshop will explore the risks of potentially large releases of methane hydrate into the atmosphere based on present trends in global warming, technological development, and energy economics.For further information, please visit:
