In order to highlight the ecological, energy, economic and social qualities of transport systems, the European Commission is sponsoring "The bus serving the public" initiative, to be held in Brussels on 10-14 October 1994. It is organized by DG XIII (DRIVE/ATT and Telematics programmes), DG XVII (THERMIE programme) and DG XI (Environment).

The event will act as a forum for the exchange of experience between locally elected administrators, network managers and transport experts from all over Europe.

The following events will take place:
- A seminar on "Telematics, an integration tool for the bus in urban traffic";
- A seminar on "The bus: future technological and political challenges";
- European buses will be put into service on the Brussels network routes from 10-12 October;
- A Eurominibus for children.

The European Commission will propose a city charter project to promote the use of public transport in the city and the use of technologies aimed at improving the performance of buses to achieve a better quality urban environment. The definitive charter text will be adopted on 12 October 1994.
